According to the La Crosse Tribune, a Minnesota man died in an accident at a Winona city-owned dock on August 27.
The dockworker, 23, was in the process of moving the cover of a docked barge when he fell 12 to 15 feet into a different empty barge, according to the news outlet. The incident took place at the Winona Commercial Harbor.
An initial investigation into the incident revealed that the man fell after a hatch unexpectedly shifted as it was being closed. The man reportedly sustained a severe head injury and died at the scene of the incident.
The man was reportedly working for CD Corp. The La Crosse Tribune reported that company specializes in dry bulk handling and transportation of fertilizer, coal, grain, salt, aggregate and scrap iron. It operates a barge loading and unloading facility where the accident took place.
