Biscayne National Park is a United States National Park that is 95 percent water located south of Miami in southern Florida. The park is over 170,000 acres and includes Elliott Key, the northernmost island of the true Florida Keys. It is a popular destination for boaters.  However, over the past decade, six people have been killed.  In fact, during its Annual Columbus Day Regatta,   officials billed the October weekend as “the most dangerous weekend of the year.”

On June 10, WFOR-TV reported that nine people had to be transported to the hospital for injuries they sustained in a two-boat accident in the waters west of Sands Cut, a popular weekend boating spot in Biscayne Park. One man was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital with severe leg injuries. According to the Miami Herald, a 36-foot Carrera with 16 passengers collided with a 28-foot Wellcraft with two people on board. The Wellcraft capsized and was recovered the following day, while the damaged Carrera was towed to Black Point Marina in Cutler Bay.

WFOR reported that it was unclear who was at fault and if any alcohol was involved, but Pino told the Herald that investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the crash. “It was a violent collision,” Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino told the Herald. “We’re very fortunate no one was killed.”
