Memorial Bridge Damaged in Maine Tanker Accident
On March 7, an oil tanker crashed into the Memorial Bridge, which connects Kittery, Maine and Portsmouth, New Hampshire, according to Foster’s Daily Democrat.

The tanker accident happened about 5:15 a.m. when the 600-foot vessel, which was headed out to sea on the Piscataqua River after unloading diesel fuel at the Sprague Oil terminal in Newington, struck the Memorial Bridge.
There were no injuries reported as a result of the collision, which caused no structural damage to the bridge. However, the fender system, which was installed to protect the crossing, did sustain damage in the wreck.
“In this case, one of the fender panels was completely knocked off and two others adjacent to that were damaged,” New Hampshire Department of Transportation Spokesman Bill Boynton said. “They were essentially scraped.”
The tanker, which sustained hull damage in the accident, was permitted to continue traveling to its next stop after the crash, the Gulf Terminal in Portland, Maine. At the time of this report, the incident was still under investigation by the Coast Guard.
