The captain of a Jamestown ferry lost his job after an August accident that occurred when he departed from the dock while cars were still loading onto the boat, sending a woman in her Toyota into the James River. The accident occurred on August 7 when the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry (JSF) left the berth while vehicles were still loading, due to the captain mistaking a mate’s waving hand as the “all clear” signal.
A 19-year-old woman was inside the Toyota that plunged into the river. She was initially trapped and pulled underwater, but was eventually rescued after she climbed out a window and stood on top of her car. According to an investigation done by the Department of Transportation, the captain left the dock before receiving the “all clear” signal, verified by security cameras at the scene. At the time of the accident, six vehicles had boarded the ferry and the Toyota was seventh in line. As the ferry departed, the Toyota was stuck halfway on the vessel and half on the ramp.
The ferry captain was originally suspended and has since lost his job. According to the Coast Guard, a full investigation into the accident is still ongoing.
