At 24 percent, two or more vessels colliding with each other ranked as the most common type of boating accident in Ohio in 2013, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

A recent Ohio River boating wreck involving a pleasure boat and a towboat has unfortunately added to Ohio’s 2014 death toll in the above-mentioned accident category. The New York Daily News released a report in September chronicling the events of the tragic crash, which claimed the lives of two off-duty Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) employees.

The wreck happened on a Thursday night on the Ohio River near downtown Cincinnati. Authorities are still trying to discover how the towboat and the FBI employees’ recreational craft collided.

Following the collision, witnesses called in the accident after reportedly hearing a loud “metal on metal” crash. By the time emergency crews reached the scene of the wreck, the two men, both in their 30s, were dead.

The crash site falls within the jurisdiction of the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife, which was still investigating the incident at the time of this report. The investigation will examine the vessels, interview any witnesses  to examining any electronic equipment on the vessel in hopes of determining the cause of the collision. Examining causes of collisions can help develop regulations and policies and procedures to prevent them in the future.
