While we are often quick to take the car keys away from elderly drivers, what about the keys to the boat?

The factors that can cause seniors to be a danger to those on the road also apply to their fellow boaters. According to American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), the risks that elderly drivers pose to their fellow motorists and boat operators often stem from poor health or age-related changes. Age-related changes can include diminished vision, slowed reaction time and muscular deterioration.

According to WITN-TV, a recent recreational boating accident in Craven County, North Carolina involved a vessel operated by a 90-year-old man. The wreck happened on Trent River near marker 9 at about 2:30 p.m. on a Saturday.

The 90-year-old operator’s pleasure boat reportedly crashed into a tour boat for yet to be determined reasons. The tourist craft involved in the wreck belongs to TugBoat Cruises, a sightseeing company that provides tours of the Neuse and Trent River area.

The accident resulted in no injuries, according to WITN-TV.
