Messenger Post Newspapers (MPN) reported that 36-year-old Jeremy Bittner sustained major injuries to his lower right leg and right foot in a loading dock accident that occurred the day after Christmas. Police told MPN that Bittner works for Admar Supply Company in Rochester, New York, and was returning a forklift to SwiftLift in Victor, New York. The 3,535-pound forklift was on the back of a flatbed truck that was backed up to a SwiftLift loading dock when it rolled into Bittner and pinned him between the wall of the loading dock and the forklift.

MPN reported that Bittner was freed after 40 minutes by personnel from two local fire departments. A person who answered the phone at SwiftLift said “no comment” when MPN asked about the incident. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified about the incident.

Forklifts can cause catastrophic injuries for a variety of workers in many different settings. Improper or negligent forklift use can lead to crushed legs or arms, which may also result in amputation in certain cases. Latti Associates LLC believes that employees who sustain serious injuries in these types of forklift accidents deserve compensation not only for medical bills and future therapy costs, but with consideration of the effects on the victim’s lifetime earning capacity. Some of the multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements our Boston maritime attorneys have obtained for clients injured by forklifts includes a $1.45 million settlement for a longshoreman who suffered a below the knee amputation after the tail swing of a forklift ran over his legs and feet.
