Many boaters seem to think that regular rules no longer apply the moment they leave the dock. The regular rules do still apply: be safe, be courteous, be aware. Six retirees were enjoying a peaceful ride on a pleasure boat in Michigan, when their craft was struck by a speedboat near Harsens Island, about 50 miles northeast of Detroit.
A speedboat ran into and over a cabin cruiser earlier this month, killing 57-year-old Robert Koontz of Macomb County’s Chesterfield Township and 68-year-old Nancy Axford of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Three other people aboard the cabin cruiser were taken to the hospital, including a 62-year-old woman in critical condition.
No one in the speedboat was hurt, and Michigan police arrested the 32-year-old driver, who they say was intoxicated when the tragedy occurred.
