Police released on January 1 that they believe a passenger that was reported as missing from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship may have fallen overboard around dawn on December 31. According to officials, the passenger was a 65-year-old man that may have fallen off the cruise ship in British Caribbean territory, 13 miles northwest of Grand Cayman.
The passenger was reported missing on December 31 by his wife who had not seen him since they went to bed at 1 a.m. The investigation was turned over to local authorities on January 1 before the cruise ship returned to its route. Authorities scoured the ship and searched the 15-deck, 1,112-foot long vessel, as well as reviewed close-circuit camera footage. The cruise ship departed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and has port calls in Jamaica and Haiti. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
This missing man is the second passenger to go missing from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship recently. On December 28, a 26-year-old Canadian man jumped overboard from the Adventures of the Seas cruise liner near a small Puerto Rican island on the last night of a Caribbean cruise with his family. The U.S. Coast Guard called the search off for the 26-year-old on December 30.
