A 39-year-old man’s body was found in J. Percy Priest Lake on September 2 in Tennessee, the day after a boating accident occurred near the Four Corners Marina. Harvie Butler was thrown from his boat when it collided with another boat, causing injuries to four other people.

The boats that collided were a 36-foot cabin cruiser and a deck boat. Both vehicles have been impounded and an investigation into the accident is ongoing.

If one of the boat operators is found to be the cause of the accident, the injured or the family of the deceased may be able to sue for negligence. Over 4,500 boating accidents occurred in the U.S. in 2012, with a fatality rate of 5.4 deaths per 100,000 vehicles. Boating accidents can cause severe brain or spinal cord injuries, neck and back injuries, broken bones, and other injuries that could require lifelong medical care. Wrongful deaths are also common result of boating accidents and can leave family members emotionally and financially unstable.
