The best man and bride-to-be of a wedding party died in a July 26 recreational boating accident on the Hudson River, according to Reuters. Mark Lennon, 30, and Lindsey Stewart, 30, were the only fatalities when a speedboat carrying six members of a wedding party crashed into a barge.
After the accident, the groom-to-be, Brian Bond, despite suffering serious head injuries, was able to call 911 to report the accident. Bond and the two other surviving passengers were taken to area hospitals with injuries. Jojo John, 35, the driver of the boat, was charged with one count of vehicular manslaughter and three counts of second-degree vehicular assault and remains in custody at a local hospital.
According to county Sheriff William Barbera, John “had consumed alcohol and was ‘intoxicated’ at the time of the crash.”
Since it was nighttime, visibility may have also played a part in John hitting the construction barge, which was anchored below the Tappan Zee Bridge.
“The night was clear but very dark because there was less than a full moon,” said Barbera. “But there were lights on the barge.”
