While being carried to his tugboat on a skiff, a crewmember fell overboard and went missing, according to Professional Mariner.
The 28-year-old crewman fell shortly before midnight on October 6 as a skiff was taking him to a small boat launch near Anchorage, Alaska, where his tugboat was anchored.
“My understanding was that he was transferring from shore to the tug so he could begin work or return to work and get underway with [the crew],” said US Coast Guard spokesman Shawn Eggert. “I believe there was one operator who was driving the skiff, just the two of them on board.”
After the man fell overboard, he was reportedly swept away by the swift tidal current. The Coast Guard conducted a 10 square mile air and sea search of the area, but failed to locate the man, who has been presumed dead.
