According to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) website, the auto capacity of the state’s Olympic Class ferries is 144 vehicles.
In a tragic incident, ferry service in Southworth, Washington had to be halted recently after a fatal accident involving an SUV driving off a ferry dock. The accident took place on a Friday around 6:00 p.m., according to KOMO-TV.
Leading up to the incident, the 60-year-old driver of the SUV was reportedly driving along the Southworth Ferry Dock at around 30 to 35 miles per hour. According to witnesses, as the SUV was traveling along the dock, it crashed through a barricade and drove off the dock and into the water.
The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office, Washington State Patrol and Seattle Fire Department were called to the scene. Rescue divers were deployed soon after. They were able to reach the SUV, which was 40 to 50 feet underwater, and once there, they retrieved the driver, who was alone in the vehicle.
Unfortunately, despite attempts to revive the driver, he died as a result of the wreck. Authorities were still trying to figure out what caused the incident at the time of this report.
