According to the New York Daily News, an oil-soaked razorbill was able to be saved after a tugboat accident left an oil spill off the coast of Far Rockaway.

The oil-soaked razorbill was found in late January by some park workers near Beach 30th Street. The bird was taken to Volunteers for Wildlife in Locust Valley, where he was nursed back to health for over two weeks. Many other loons and razorbills found in similar condition after the spill died.

“It’s a bad spill no matter what the volume,” said Cindy Zipf, executive director of Clean Ocean Action, a nonprofit environmental watchdog group. “Marine life can be affected at very minute levels of contamination.”

The tug accident, which happened in January, resulted in the tugboat spilling over 6,000 gallons of diesel fuel into the water as it sunk just outside of Atlantic Beach.

Boats stationed near the icy waters of Long Island responded as the 38-foot tugboat began to capsize on January 15, saving four men in reportedly dramatic fashion before the vessel sank.
