A recent incident in Baltimore Harbor shows the challenges maritime workers face on the job. On Monday evening, the merchant vessel W-Sapphire, a 751-foot bulk carrier carrying coal, experienced an explosion near the site of the Key Bridge. Flames and smoke were reported rising from the ship, prompting a mayday call. Fortunately, all 23 crew members and two pilots aboard were unharmed.
Investigation and Safety Response
The explosion temporarily closed the Fort McHenry Federal Channel, a main shipping route, while authorities checked the ship for damage and investigated the cause. Officials reported that the vessel showed signs consistent with fire and explosion. The U.S. Coast Guard set up a safety zone around the area, extinguished the fire, and coordinated the next steps for the vessel. No injuries or property damage outside the ship were reported.
