Could I Be Hurt in a Tugboat Accident Because of a Mate’s Mistake?

In parts of the sea that have been explored and mapped extensively, known hazards are often charted to prevent vessels from colliding with them. Unfortunately, despite the fact that a pier that sunk in the late 1990s was a “known and charted hazard,” according to a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) accident brief, a mate still misjudged its location, resulting in a tugboat accident.

According to The Baltimore Sun, the tugboat accident took place last year off Locust Point and resulted in the KALEEN MCALLISTER sinking and sustaining $1.5 million in damage. The incident also led to diesel fuel from the vessel spilling into the water.

Thankfully, no one was injured in the wreck. According to the mate whose misjudgment the NTSB’s accident brief claims led to the tugboat accident, he had “navigated the waters around Pier 1 about 500 times before the accident” without ever striking the sunken pier before.

Latti Associates LLC had previously represented a crew member who was injured on the KALEEN MCALLISTER and recovered a $2.25 million settlement for injuries sustained from an electric shock.   If you have been injured in a maritime accident, it is important that you contact a maritime attorney.
